Actually, the battle of Iraq was won pretty early on. ...It's the aftermath and rebuilding that we are engaged in now and it is questionable whether we are winning or not. In the early stages of the war Saddam's national army was soundly defeated within a few months. The enemy we are dealing with now is a completely different mixture of combatants.
My regret is that the administration hasn't drawn this distinction and continues to perpetuate the leftist mantra of defeat. In my eyes the Iraq war is over and a police action is taking place. If we treat the current occupation like a war, it will make it increasingly impossible to declare victory for years to come or maybe never . We are unnecessarily painting ourselves into a samantical corner.
By the "Iraq standard" we are also losing the war in Pakistan, the war in england, the war in Indonesia, Spain, Afghanistan etc , all because terrorists continue to kill innocent people.
It has become clear to me that for many years we will be finding and fighting radical terrorists...That doesn't mean we are losing, it just means we are fighting!
You win this war by continuing to fight it. There will not be a treaty at the end, there will not be a surrender, The war is won on a daily basis.
If we are resigned to oppose terror, we are winning. If we allow terror to be used as a political tool or make excuses for it we are losing. It's that simple! We need to Call this thing for what it is.... A perpetual series of battles and test of the will of all civilized people.
If you agree please help to correct this mis -charcterization of THE WAR ON TERROR
